Sara Lee Corporation Announces Donation Of Nearly Two Million Meals To Feeding America

Downers Grove, Ill. (November 18, 2009) — Sara Lee Corporation today announced that in fiscal 2009 the company donated the equivalent of 1.8 million meals to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to help so many people by providing nutritious meals, including high quality protein, to those in need,” said Judy Schaefer, director of community investment, Sara Lee Corporation. “With these significant product donations, Sara Lee has impacted the lives of thousands of families in communities across the country, one meal at a time.”

Sara Lee directs its food donations through Feeding America which is able to quickly integrate the large volume of perishable food to its national network of more than 200 food banks. The food banks then efficiently and safely redistribute the food to their 63,000 community-based pantries that service local communities. Together, Sara Lee and Feeding America are strong partners who work quickly and efficiently to provide nutritious food directly to low-income individuals and families around the country.

“Feeding America is proud of the longstanding commitment Sara Lee has shown as we’ve worked together for the past 25 years,” said Vicki Escarra, president and chief executive officer of Feeding America. “With millions of meals donated, Sara Lee is truly demonstrating what it takes to end hunger in America.”

Sara Lee’s commitment to helping those in need is a pillar of the company’s sustainability efforts. Initiatives such as this detailing Sara Lee’s sustainability commitment can be found in the company’s 2009 Sustainability Report at www.saralee.com.
